A quirky book - Holy Orders

A quirky book – Holy Orders

I don't think that I have read anything by Benjamin Black before. Today I started on Holy Orders, book 6 in the Quirke series. A quirky (if I may say so) pathologist taking on the role of detective to find the culprit who murdered a friend of his daughter. The Quirke series has apparently been adapted for television, though I have never seen any of the episodes ...

Writing a Novel in Markdown with Obsidian (70+ Books Later)

Why Markdown? Markdown files are plain text, with a few added characters or symbols used to format it for conversation to HTML or other formats. Being plain text files, they are very small and not likely to become corrupted. Writing one scene or one chapter per file also keeps them very small. Since they are written in plain text, they can be edited with any text processor or word processor ...

Reading Verses for the Dead

Reading Verses for the Dead

Verses for the Dead is book #18 in the Pendergast series by Preston & Child. If you have read any of the rest of the series, you know that Agent Pendergast (FBI) prefers to work on his own, but in this case he is paired up with a junior agent to "assist" him (ie. spy on him and report any rogue behaviour to their boss.) A serial killer is on the loose, and Pendergast is the only one who seems to have any idea how to pursue the investigation. ...
Giving thanks for books!

Giving thanks for books!

There is so much to give thanks for, even in tough times. We had a week of challenges last week, but have been blessed in so many things. Showing gratitude for the good things and blessings in our life is important, so it is nice to have a day set apart to do so. (Even if you are not in the USA, you are probably aware of US Thanksgiving this week.) ...
Investigating A Most Curious Murder

Investigating A Most Curious Murder

She is confronted by first, the destruction of her mother's little library, and then by something even worse ...

Nanowrimo—why or why not?

Nanowrimo—why or why not?

I've written on Nanowrimo (National Novel Writing Month) before. If you've hung out here for a few years you know that I participate every year. But why? I knew I wanted to do a blog post on nano today, and I was trying to figure out what to write. What it is that you want to know. What you would ask me if you had the chance (and you can ask me in the comment section below. I'll answer you!) What I originally homed in on is why or why not to participate in Nanowrimo. Some writers have very strong opinions on the matter. Some people love nano. Some people hate it. Some people keep trying it and giving up, some try and succeed, and some wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. ...

Let's not forget this classic Agatha Christie

Let’s not forget this classic Agatha Christie

I have just finished reading Elephants Can Remember, a classic Poirot mystery by Agatha Christie. I don't recall having read this one before. It was an engaging story, with the facts/clues presented to the reader giving them lots of opportunity to put the puzzle together and figure out what happened. Christie sometimes holds back clues from the reader, especially in Poirot books, not telling us everything that the Belgian detective has discovered in his investigations, but I think everything relevant had been mentioned in this one. I had a pretty good idea what had happened, though there are enough red herrings to keep me guessing as to which are relevant. ...

Fiction Books for ADHD Awareness

Fiction Books for ADHD Awareness

October is National ADHD Awareness month, so I thought it would be a good time to shine a spotlight on ADHD. Back to Paranormal - Grey Dawn

Back to Paranormal – Grey Dawn

I am close to the end of Grey Dawn, and while I have a few ideas as to what is going on, I haven't yet figured it all out. I have had a pretty good idea of who was not the culprit since the early pages, and I did pick up on a few of the clues that are now being revealed. I'll have to see how it all ties together in the end! ...
