I have just finished Someone We Know by Shari Lapena. Lapena does a great job with domestic thrillers. I have previously read A Stranger in the House. Someone We Know explores the idea of what happens when someone close to you is murdered and you realize that the murderer is (most likely) also someone you know. There are plenty of secrets in this neighborhood. A great set-up for a suspenseful story.

I am currently reading Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s Good Omens. If you’ve read any Neil Gaiman, you probably know that it is going to be crazy, illogical, colourful, tongue-in-cheek and all rather brilliant. It looks like it was serialized last year on Amazon Prime, though I haven’t seen it. I am enjoying it so far. If you like things like Douglass Adams (Hitchhiker’s Guide) and Monty Python, you’ll like Neil Gaiman.

I am partway into a true crime book about the Golden State Killer, I’ll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman’s Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer by Michelle McNamara.
Despite the author’s obsession with unmasking the Golden State Killer, all of the hours and years she put into it, she passed away before the book was completed and published. Her husband and editor (?) put it together and wrote what they could from her notes. Michelle McNamara did not live to see the Golden State Killer caught using DNA evidence. It looks like there is an afterword in the book to cover that.

Today I just started reading The Flight Attendant by Chris Bohjalian. I’m not sure what I think of it so far, but it looks like it could be a good read. The protagonist is clearly broken and ha a lot of issues that don’t make her too relatable, at least to start with. I imagine I’ll get to empathize and relate with her more as I get deeper into the book. The premise has lots of potential.

I just finished reading A Better Man, book #15 in Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache series. Inspector Gamache has been demoted back to head of homicide, which is really where he belongs. The murder of Vivienne Godin is a real brain-teaser. While I suspected the murderer ahead of time, I didn’t have enough to quite be sure. Louise Penny is always a good read!

I am currently reading The Alice Network, by Kate Quinn. I don’t read a lot of historical novels, but I am enjoying the twists and turns and the great historical and geographical details that are woven into the story. It is an engaging suspense book, and I am looking forward to finding out more about the espionage network and what has happened to Charlie’s cousin.

I am currently reading Dark Sacred Night by Michael Connelly. It is officially part of the Renee Ballard series, but also features Harry Bosch as well. While there are a number of negative reviews on Amazon, I have enjoyed it so far. Michael Connelly is a master writer, he knows how to build characters the reader cares about and he knows his police procedure.

I’ve just started reading Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men, by Caroline Criado Perez. As you might guess by the title, this one is not a thriller! But I am finding it very interesting. Not as a “feminist” book, but as a book about data, the way the world has been engineered, how what data we gather affects the results, and how to become more aware of these built-in biases. It is a fascinating subject.
