I just finished Pardonable Lies by Jacqueline Winspear. I’ve read a number of books in the Maisie Dobbs series, and they are quite interesting. This week I am reading Lost, by James Patterson and James O Born. It is a great thriller that revolves around international human trafficking and is set in Miami, Florida.

I haven’t been enamored with some of John Grisham’s releases, but The Guardians, a legal suspense novel released in 2019 hits all of the right notes for me. It is not fast-paced, but definitely holds my interest as public defender-turned-priest-turned-innocence lawyer Cullen Post works a case to get a death-row inmates’ conviction overturned. He is working on several cases at the same time, so you get to hear a number of stories about the type of people who may end up in prison or on death row even though they are innocent.

In today’s book, The Outsider by Linda Castillo, Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is snowbound in Amish country in Ohio, along with a fugitive who happens to be an old friend. While she would like to think that Gina is blameless in the situation she finds herself in, Kate knows that her friend is keeping things from her and that she cannot keep Gina’s presence from the men who are looking for her for long.
I always enjoy Linda Castillo’s Kate Burkholder series. They are warm and homey, with a sharp edge of suspense to keep you from getting too comfortable. Who knew that Amish suspense would be such a great mashup?

On one hand, it seems like Christmas is just barely over, and on the other, it feels like it was ages ago. But luckily, I can read about Christmas all year long. This week I am reading James Patterson’s The 19th Christmas, another from the Women’s Murder Club series.
Patterson is always a solid choice for me, and with 9,000 people giving it an overall rating of 4.7 stars out of 5 on Amazon, I guess there are a lot of others who are of the same opinion.

William Kent Krueger and Cork O’Connor are new to me, but have clearly been around for a while. I have just started in on Iron Lake, and so far it is developing very nicely, with deep characterization, just the right amount of description, and the beginning of an intriguing plot. I can’t tell you much more than that right now, but I am eager to get farther into the story to see if my initial guesses about what has happened to the missing boy Paul LeBeau are correct.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is an encyclopedic book about various magical creatures in J.K. Rowling’s magical world. This is not the screenplay/movie. It begins with some playful forwards/introductions, and then proceeds into the encyclopedia of magical beasts (and where to find them.) Fans will recognize not only the popular mythical creatures like dragons, fairies, and phoenixes, but also some of J.K. Rowling’s creations like nifflers and bowtruckles.
