Unwind the Conspiracy in All the Devils Are Here

I released He Never Forgot, Book #9 in the Zachary Goldman Mysteries series this weekend. If you didn’t get a chance to pick up your copy, head on over now! A number of other new releases that may be of interest are also mentioned in my last blog post.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I had a hard time choosing which book to do a teaser from this week, but I have settled on All the Devils Are Here, the latest read in Louise Penny’s Chief Inspector Gamache series.

If you were afraid after the last book (A Better Man) that we had heard the last of Jean-Guy Beauvoir, you can put your fears to rest. Jean-Guy is in France, and Armand Gamache and his wife are there with them, to visit their son and welcome the arrival of Jean-Guy’s and Annie’s first child.

Of course, it is not the quiet vacation the Gamaches expected, and with Armand’s godfather being struck down in a hit-and-run accident, they are thrust into the centre of a wicked conspiracy. You will have to exchange Louise Penny’s lyrical descriptions of the Quebec landscape for those of the City of Light, and all of our fravourite characters from Three Pines are back home and in the background, but Penny still brings it home with a great suspenseful mystery.

I did guess most of the clues and anticipate twists in the plot, but I was still surprised a couple of times and enjoyed watching Armand, Reine-Marie, and Jean-Guy. And at the end, you will be happy to discover that… but I won’t spoil it for you.

But then, Armand Gamache thought, where else would you find darkness but right up against the light?

Louise Penny, All the Devils Are Here

On their first night in Paris, the Gamaches gather as a family for a bistro dinner with Armand’s godfather, the billionaire Stephen Horowitz. Walking home together after the meal, they watch in horror as Stephen is knocked down and critically injured in what Gamache knows is no accident, but a deliberate attempt on the elderly man’s life.

When a strange key is found in Stephen’s possession it sends Armand, his wife Reine-Marie, and his former second-in-command at the Sûreté, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, from the top of the Tour d’Eiffel, to the bowels of the Paris Archives, from luxury hotels to odd, coded, works of art.

It sends them deep into the secrets Armand’s godfather has kept for decades.

A gruesome discovery in Stephen’s Paris apartment makes it clear the secrets are more rancid, the danger far greater and more imminent, than they realized.

Soon the whole family is caught up in a web of lies and deceit. In order to find the truth, Gamache will have to decide whether he can trust his friends, his colleagues, his instincts, his own past. His own family.

For even the City of Light casts long shadows. And in that darkness devils hide.
