Reading The Princess Bride? Inconceivable!

It has been a strange week for reading! I started with one book that I did not finish, went on to an audiobook that was produced like a radio play, and then a couple of other quickies, one a holiday (Christmas) special and the other: The Princess Bride. Usually I have one or two books to pick from, this time I had four. I listened to the audiobook of The Princess Bride, which is, unfortunately, abridged. I’ll have to read the full text another time. But that’s what I’ve got, so that’s what we’ll go with.

Educate Yourself and Help Others with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is an encyclopedic book about various magical creatures in J.K. Rowling’s magical world. This is not the screenplay/movie. It begins with some playful forwards/introductions, and then proceeds into the encyclopedia of magical beasts (and where to find them.) Fans will recognize not only the popular mythical creatures like dragons, fairies, and phoenixes, but also some of J.K. Rowling’s creations like nifflers and bowtruckles.

Excerpt from Carve the Mark

It’s been a long time since I read anything by Veronica Roth (author of the Divergent series). Carve the Mark is an engaging sci fi set in a galaxy with magical gifts, various kinds of planets, warring nations, and families fated to conflict with each other. Nice deep characterization, vibrant worlds, and plenty of conflict will keep you turning the pages.

Excerpt from Good Omens

I am currently reading Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s Good Omens. If you’ve read any Neil Gaiman, you probably know that it is going to be crazy, illogical, colourful, tongue-in-cheek and all rather brilliant. It looks like it was serialized last year on Amazon Prime, though I haven’t seen it. I am enjoying it so far. If you like things like Douglass Adams (Hitchhiker’s Guide) and Monty Python, you’ll like Neil Gaiman.

Rogue Skies

Transport yourself to new worlds where dark magic clashes with witty witches, diabolic demons, feisty fae, and sexy shifters. Or travel through time and space with cosmic spies, space thieves, and telepathic pirates. Add in a dash of Victorian heroes and inhuman soldiers, and you have a one-of-a-kind science fiction and fantasy collection of intoxicating proportions.

Excerpt from The Hollow City

My teaser is from Hollow City, book 2 of the series Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. I just started it, but it has been interesting so far, picking up where book one finished and continuing Jacob’s trip away from the island and into his journey of self-discovery.
