This is one book that’s been on my reading list for some time. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, by Ransom Riggs, has been made into a movie by Tim Burton, but I had my eye on it even before then. It is first in a series of three.

Looking over my shelf, I see I actually read two David Baldacci books in the last week. I’ve picked Simply Genius for my excerpt today. Baldacci is the master of building suspenseful plot, and this one was no exception. I enjoyed the more diverse than usual cast, including an ex-soldier with a prosthetic limb and the murder victim’s neurodiverse daughter.

I mentioned The Life We Bury in my last post, and I had to bring it up again to give you a teaser. I really enjoyed this one. Faintly reminiscent of To Kill a Mockingbird, this well-woven mystery is a pleasure to read. The writer/sleuth has a complex background and a younger brother with autism. The brother is treated as a real person and not just a foil or token diverse character.

This week I am reading Scorpion Strike (A Jonathan Grave Thriller) by John Gilstrap. I don’t think I’ve read any of the other books in the series. A hostage-taking on an idyllic island paradise quickly ramps up the tension. Lots of great characters and a good, quickly moving plot.

I just finished The Yard by Alex Grecian an hour ago. I don’t think I’ve read anything else by this author. It was an enjoyable police procedural with lots of good historical details about Victorian England. There are several intersecting plots and the identity of the killer is revealed fairly early. The character development is good and I would definitely read others in the series.

I just finished reading Island of Shipwrecks, book #5 of the YA Fantasy Unwanteds series by Lisa McMann. This is probably not a series that you want to jump into the middle of like I did! While there are enough clues to puzzle out the backstory, you will be missing a lot of the depth of the story and the characters.

I can always rely on Jack Reacher to entertain me! I am reaching A Wanted Man by Lee Child, book #17 in the Jack Reacher series. The interesting thing about this book is that so far, almost all of the Jack Reacher scenes have been in the car. It’s interesting how much tension you can build with four people stuck in a car together. But then, if you’ve been on a family vacation, you probably already know that!

A Banquet of Consequences is not the first Elizabeth George mystery I have read this year. It is part of the Inspector Lynley series, though I haven’t heard much from Lynley yet! I am not too far into the book yet, and am interested in seeing how the suicide and the investigation end up being connected. Elizabeth George builds unique, well-rounded characters.

I just started this mystery/suspense today, and it’s kept my attention so far! All the Missing Girls by Megan Miranda starts at the end and works its way back to the disappearance/murder of Annaleise, the second girl to go missing from amongst a group of friends, the first of whom disappeared a decade before. It is clear from the beginning that everyone knows more than they have revealed, but they’re not giving up their secrets easily.
