I just finished reading Holly Black’s The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air) and I was not disappointed. Author of the Spiderwick Chronicles and many more faery fantasy books full of rich detail and cunning twists and turns of plot, and always a good sense of humour. I don’t think I’ve read a Holly Black book I didn’t like.

Neurotribes by Steve Silberman has been on my “to read” list for a while now, and I wish I had picked it up sooner. Silberman delves into the history of the recognition of autism, its diagnosis and treatment, and the neurodiversity movement. He is a great storyteller and has a genuine interest in the children, families, and adults he learned about autism from.

My current read is It’s Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini, a young adult book about depression and managing mental illness. It has been made into a much-acclaimed movie. In spite of the subject matter, it’s a light-hearted book with plenty of humour. While the thought processes and experiences of Craig, the main character with depression are quite different than mine, Ned Vizzini wrote from his own experience and tragically succumbed to his own depression at age 32.

I just started Emma Donoghue’s Room today, but I am already entranced by it. I love little Jack’s voice and the courage of his mother. A very difficult topic handled in a surprisingly charming way.

I am really enjoying a new (to me) book from Jim Butcher, The Cinder Spires: The Aeronaut’s Windlass. I’ve read a couple of the Dresden Files series before, but this is the first in the Cinder Spires series. This new world of crystal-powered airships, pirates, and warrior cats is the best fantasy I’ve read in a long time. There is enough undiscovered backstory and possibilities to sustain several series.

I’ve read a few of Charles Todd’s Ian Rutledge mysteries in the last year, and quite enjoy this Scotland Yard Inspector’s adventures, including the ever-present second voice in his head, a remnant of the shell-shock he suffered from his service during WWI. Racing the Devil is no exception, and I am interested in seeing how this one turns out!

Something a little different this week, a 600 page post-apocalyptic dystopian epic with viral vampires. I haven’t read anything by Justin Cronin before. This is the second book in his Passage trilogy. I have found the switches back and forth through the timeline very confusing, and feel like the stories I was most interested in have been abandoned. But I’m only halfway through, so maybe the other storylines will reappear or will be resolved somehow.

I have not read any of Jojo Moyes’ books before, and as I often do, I just jumped into the middle of the series rather than starting at the beginning. After You is easily understandable as a stand alone novel. Good depth of characters, a unique plot, and several lines that made me laugh out loud. There is some unnecessary language, so be warned.
