Have a Non-Romantic Valentine’s Day

This year, I wanted to do something a little bit different again. I wanted to focus on characters who were asexual or aromantic. But in searching for them, I kept running up against books that were about sexual relationships and romance, but from or including an ace/aro perspective or character. And I realized that wasn’t what I was looking for. I was looking for books that did not focus on romance at all. Where sex and romance were not the focus of the story, or even a subplot.

manga style kabedon hand on the wall pose

What is Kabedon? — kabe-don, ‘pin to the wall’ & ‘hand against wall’ pose explained

What is Kabedon (kabe-don)? Learn why the ‘pin to the wall’ or ‘hand against wall’ pose can feel romantic in fiction yet problematic in real life. Consent, body language, and how I treat kabedoned scenes in my books. the subject of Kabedon came up. Not something I had ever heard of before, so I won’t assume that you have either. Kabedon is a new trend in Japanese courtship, popularized in manga and anime. Kabe-don (“wall punch”) is the act of the man slapping his hand on the wall next to the woman, pinning her in position by his proximity. He may place only one hand on the wall, or one hand on either side of her so that she is encircled by his arms. He leans in very close to talk to her.

Romance or crime?

Over the last month or so, I have watched way too many Christmas romance movies. My husband really likes them, so we have watched just about every one that has come on TV, or at least it feels that way. These movies tend to be very formulaic, as described in this satirical post that I saw on Facebook.

Put a little mystery in your Christmas

I thought that Christmas mysteries would be a great topic for today’s blog! There are a lot of great ones out there.

I don’t have any books that are specifically Christmas mysteries, but both She Wore Mourning and He was Walking Alone are mysteries that take place during the Christmas season, and I have a short Christmas mystery in the Auntie Clem’s Bakery series, Dog-Free Dinner.

Here are some others that I have pulled up today.
