Launch Day: Questing for a Dream
It really surprises me how I can feel so differently from one book release to another. Some of them I am pretty ‘chill’ about or am just happy to finally get done.

Por Conta Própria is the second foreign language translation of Stand Alone. (The first was Spanish.) I really enjoyed working with Portuguese translator Juliano Timbó Martins and he put a lot of thought into giving Portuguese readers an authentic translation of my story.

It seems like every writer’s forum eventually ends up with an animated discussion of whether it is better to plot your novels or write by the seat of your pants. (Are you a plotter or a pantser?)

This one is the toughest so far! I have not limited it to young adult fiction, or the list would be even shorter. There are plenty of memoirs and biographies about personality disorders, and of course lots of non-fiction self-help or diagnostic type books, but very very little that is pure fiction.

As usual, I have joined up with Camp Nanowrimo, a July event run by the Nanowrimo (National Novel Writing Month) guys. That’s my cover concept mock-up to the left. I have done both April and July camps the last couple of years, as well as the big event, Nanowrimo in November. The usual goal is to write a 50,000 word novel draft in a month. I usually go for around 100,000, since that’s the length of most of my novels. Nano provides some great support and excitement around novel-writing, and I love a reason to set aside one month to make writing a higher priority and to get a new work drafted.

It’s really amazing how blind we can be to what is going on around us. I had some awareness of the living conditions of our Aboriginal People as far back as 1988/89, pre-internet, when I wrote a short story about them on my XT computer. In the intervening time, almost three decades, I kind of assumed that things had changed. The media tends to portray aboriginals as whining over historical treatment which cannot be changed, or turning down million or billion dollar petrochemical deals. Very little is said about current conditions, and then it is buried by news of natural disasters or elections.
