I’ll read pretty much anything by Orson Scott Card, whether it is in the genres I would normally read or not. I have read the first two books in the Mither Mages series, and although there are many negative reviews for the third book, I am enjoying Gatefather so far. It is similar to C.S. Lewis in some ways in its discussion of the nature of God, the universe, and the role of free choice.

I am re-reading I Let You Go by Clare Mackintosh this week. I had to check to see if I had done an excerpt on it here before, but it doesn’t look like I have. This is a domestic thriller/police procedural mashup about the hit-and-run killing of a five-year-old boy. Despite the fact that I figured out most of the twists ahead of time, it was still an enjoyable read. It is well-written and intriguing, even if you know the plot ahead of time.

I have just finished reading Michael Connelly’s Two Kinds of Truth, a Harry Bosch novel. Maybe some of you are watching Bosch on Amazon. According to Wikipedia, the 2019 season was based on Two Kinds of Truth. Don’t worry, I’m not going to spoil it for you (assuming the tv series follows the novel.)

I have just started reading The Stranger in the Woods, by Michael Finkel, an account of a hermit who lived in the woods of Maine for almost three decades, surviving off of bold thefts from the camp and homes just a few minutes from his tent without discovery. It’s interesting to hear Finkel’s firsthand account of his interviews with Christopher Knight and the investigation into how he survived without any contact with humanity.

I just finished reading I’ve Got my Eyes on You by Mary Higgins Clark. The Queen of Suspense is always good for for an interesting murder mystery, and does not disappoint with this police procedural. There are plenty of suspects in this book, and while I guessed the perp early on, I still enjoyed the telling of the story.

Right now, I am reading Dangerous Minds by Janet Evanovich. It is the second book in the Knight and Moon series, and I have actually read the first one as well. I love the characters in this book. Evanovich writes lots of fun, quirky characters, and does not disappoint in this series. We’ve got an eccentric billionaire and the practical woman who tires without success to keep him stable and down to earth. There is a monk who has lost his island, and the billionaire’s cousin, a hanger-on who is eccentric in his own rite. Put it together with an international threat, a secret society, and of course the missing (stolen) island, and you’ve got an Evanovich classic.

I have just started reading The Camel Club by David Baldacci. I have read one or two other books in the Camel Club series. There are some good characters; I am particularly enjoying the OCD member of the club, Milton Farb. But I am partial to characters with neurodiversities. Baldacci is always good for suspense and well-structured plots and clues. Lots of action and thrills.

I am currently reading The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window And Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson. This is not like most of the other books that I have read. The book that I have read that it is most similar to is Catch-22 by Joseph Heller. Or maybe Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy set in WWII Europe. It is the ridiculous adventure of an audacious Swede who runs into trouble and makes new friends at every turn. Both jinxed and charmed, you never know what’s going to happen to Allan Karlsson next.

This week I am just finishing up Golden Prey, by John Sandford. This is an engaging thriller with more twists and turns than a bag of Twizzlers. The criminals are smart, and so are the federal marshal and agents on their tails. It is a great game of cat and mouse, and while the feds are bound to win in the end, I’m not quite sure how.
