I have just started After Anna by Lisa Scottoline. Scottoline writes some amazing plots. In this book, there are two point of views, Maggie’s, which is running forward in time from when she meets Anna and Noah’s, which is running backward in time from the point at which his verdict will be read. At some point they will intersect, and I will have the full story. Or almost. Maybe. Being able to tell two stories from two different viewpoints and reveal the plot points in just the right order is an amazing talent.

I don’t often say this, but I loved this book! I had scrolled past Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus by Dusti Bowling more than once, but I’m glad I stopped and looked at it this time. This is a middle school/young adult novel about Aven, a girl born with no arms. Having moved to Arizona halfway through the school year, she has to make new friends. A big challenge after spending her whole life in Kansas, where she grew up with the same kids since kindergarten.

I am reading The Burning Maze, book #3 of the Trials of Apollo by Rick Riordan. It’s been a few years since I read the Percy Jackson series with my son. I’m not sure which is the last book we read, but I am recognizing a number of the characters and incidents from the original series as I read this one. Rick Riordan is a great storyteller with lots of magic, excitement, and sympathetic characters. I always enjoy his books.

The other book I am reading right now is Greer Hendricks’s and Sarah Pekkanen’s An Anonymous Girl. A psychological thriller, Jessica Ferris signs up to participate in a study on ethics and morality, which grows more and more involved and bizarre. Jess is encouraged to share all of her secrets, and she doesn’t want to answer all of Dr. Shields’ questions, but she needs the money for participating in the study.

It’s been a long time since I read anything by Veronica Roth (author of the Divergent series). Carve the Mark is an engaging sci fi set in a galaxy with magical gifts, various kinds of planets, warring nations, and families fated to conflict with each other. Nice deep characterization, vibrant worlds, and plenty of conflict will keep you turning the pages.

I am currently reading Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s Good Omens. If you’ve read any Neil Gaiman, you probably know that it is going to be crazy, illogical, colourful, tongue-in-cheek and all rather brilliant. It looks like it was serialized last year on Amazon Prime, though I haven’t seen it. I am enjoying it so far. If you like things like Douglass Adams (Hitchhiker’s Guide) and Monty Python, you’ll like Neil Gaiman.

I am partway into a true crime book about the Golden State Killer, I’ll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman’s Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer by Michelle McNamara.
Despite the author’s obsession with unmasking the Golden State Killer, all of the hours and years she put into it, she passed away before the book was completed and published. Her husband and editor (?) put it together and wrote what they could from her notes. Michelle McNamara did not live to see the Golden State Killer caught using DNA evidence. It looks like there is an afterword in the book to cover that.

Today I just started reading The Flight Attendant by Chris Bohjalian. I’m not sure what I think of it so far, but it looks like it could be a good read. The protagonist is clearly broken and ha a lot of issues that don’t make her too relatable, at least to start with. I imagine I’ll get to empathize and relate with her more as I get deeper into the book. The premise has lots of potential.
