I’ve finished a few books in the past week, including one by a favourite author of mine, Mary Higgins Clark, but the one I had to highlight was Roald Dahl’s The BFG. BFG, for those of you who don’t know, stands for Big Friendly Giant. It has grown in popularity since being made into a movie by Steven Spielberg. I am so excited to kick off my first cozy mystery series. While I’ve been flexing my mystery muscles recently with books such as The Girl in the Morgue and She Wore Mourning, the Auntie Clem’s Bakery series has a different vibe. A little lighter and more fun, with animal antics and delicious baking as a counterpoint to the murder investigations. My book this week is not a mystery or a thriller, but a “slice of life” women’s contemporary novel, Family Tree, a novel by Susan Wiggs. I wasn’t sure when I downloaded it whether it would keep me interested, or whether it would be a yawn that I eventually gave up on. It has turned out to be a fascinating tapestry of interwoven stories, a combination of family epic, romance, and recovery from tragedy.
