Silence on the Turf is set in Shouldice Park.
Shouldice Park sits in northwest Calgary along the Bow River, combining a neighbourhood park with one of the city’s major athletic complexes. The park is named after pioneer James Shouldice, who donated the land to the city on the condition that it become a park. The land remained largely untouched for about 40 years after his death before being developed in the late 1960s.
Today, Shouldice is best known for sport. The broader complex includes soccer and football fields, baseball diamonds, tennis courts, batting cages, a seasonal dome, an arena, and the Shouldice Aquatic Centre. That makes it a very different kind of Parks Pat setting: not quiet wilderness, but bright turf, packed parking lots, and the restless energy of tournament day.
Shouldice is not all organized sport, though. It also has river access, multiuse pathways, picnic areas, and a large accessible playground, so families, paddlers, walkers, and athletes all overlap in the same space.
