Reservoir of Secrets is set around the Glenmore Reservoir and its surrounding parks.
The Glenmore Dam was completed in the early 1930s, creating the Glenmore Reservoir. Water drawn from the reservoir supplies the Glenmore Water Treatment Plant, part of the Elbow River system that provides approximately 40 percent of Calgary’s water. North Glenmore Park and South Glenmore Park developed around the reservoir.
The reservoir itself offers a place for canoeing, kayaking, sailing, rowing, and dragon boat racing. It is surrounded by extensive multiuse pathways for walking, running, and biking, with the occasional sighting of bears or cougars.
The author has attended a number of church and family picnics and wiener roasts in Glenmore Park, followed by a game of catch, frisbee, or a walk along the trails.
South Glenmore also boasts a spray park, an inclusive playground, and a bicycle pump track, where cyclists pump their bodies up and down over hills and banks to propel themselves forward rather than pedaling.
The parks contain a great deal of biodiversity, with many species of birds, including waterfowl, raptors, and songbirds, as well as small mammals such as squirrels, chipmunks, and rabbits, plus the occasional deer and predators.
