This week, I am reading The Last Anniversary, by Liane Moriarty. It has been a very interesting read so far. Moriarty weaves the intertwined stories of the members of an Australian family who were involved in the case of a couple who disappeared, leaving their infant daughter behind as a cake cooled on the counter and the kettle on the stove had not yet started to boil.

I don’t think I’ve ever been disappointed with a David Baldacci book. My current read, First Family, is part of the King & Maxwell series. Sean King and Michael Maxwell are complex characters, satisfying to read, and this book revolves around the mysterious kidnapping of the First Lady’s niece.

Last week I read Deep Freeze, by John Sandford. This is part of the Virgil Flowers series, which I’ve read at least one book from before. John Sandford writes complex mysteries with plenty of twists and turns and misdirection. Virgil Flowers is a relatable detective, smart, and always a good read.

I am currently reading Sandra Brown’s Low Pressure. A murder mystery where the main character, Bellamy Lyston, has written a fictional novel based on her own sister’s murder and all of the personalities involved. This might not seem like such a bad idea when the killer had already been caught, tried, and incarcerated, but if the wrong man ended up in prison, that would mean that the real killer is still on the outside. Brown ramps up the suspense as Bellamy digs into past to try to discover the bits of what happened that day that she has blocked from her memory.

I’ve read and mentioned a few other Louise Penny books on this blog before. Based in Quebec, the Inspector Gamache series always delves deep into the setting and history, psychology, and the complex relationships between the characters. Gamache has dealt with a lot of betrayal and corruption in his time, and in this volume, he is once again trying to root out the source of the ongoing problems in the Sûreté du Québec and how it is tied into the mysterious map and disappearing villages.
