Excerpt from Deadline

This week I am reading Sandra Brown’s Deadline. I have previously mentioned Low Pressure here. Sandra Brown’s writing is not cookie cutter fiction, she produces thrillers that are fresh and new, with interesting characters and twists.

Excerpt from The Haunting of Hill House

You may recognize this week’s title, as it has also been made into a TV series apparently available on Netflix. The Haunting of Hill House is a 1959 gothic horror novel written by Shirley Jackson. It was hailed by the Wall Street Journal as “now widely regarded as the greatest haunted-house story ever written.” It is also the story behind the movies “The Haunting.”

Excerpt from A Great Reckoning

I’ve read and mentioned a few other Louise Penny books on this blog before. Based in Quebec, the Inspector Gamache series always delves deep into the setting and history, psychology, and the complex relationships between the characters. Gamache has dealt with a lot of betrayal and corruption in his time, and in this volume, he is once again trying to root out the source of the ongoing problems in the Sûreté du Québec and how it is tied into the mysterious map and disappearing villages.

Excerpt from The Lost City of the Monkey God

I don’t often post about non-fiction books, and I didn’t even mean to pick this one up, but it has been a fascinating journey so far. Journalist Douglas Preston takes the reader through the discovery of ancient cities in Honduras using liar in 2012 in The Lost City of the Monkey God. Learn the history of the area, meet colorful characters, and find out what happened after the discovery.

Excerpt from The Escape Artist

Brad Meltzer is a master of the political intrigue thriller. Looking at his Amazon page, he also writes biographies for children that look quite interesting! I am loving Zig in The Escape Artist, underdog, mortician for fallen soldiers at Dover Air Force Base, still in mourning over the death of his young daughter years before. He is an artist and a someone who believes deeply in making things right. Not a lot of writers can pull off main characters who are broken or depressed, but Meltzer does it well.

Put a little mystery in your Christmas

I thought that Christmas mysteries would be a great topic for today’s blog! There are a lot of great ones out there.

I don’t have any books that are specifically Christmas mysteries, but both She Wore Mourning and He was Walking Alone are mysteries that take place during the Christmas season, and I have a short Christmas mystery in the Auntie Clem’s Bakery series, Dog-Free Dinner.

Here are some others that I have pulled up today.

Excerpt from Betrayed

I am currently reading a Lisa Scottoline novel, Betrayed. It is part of the Rosato & DiNunzio series. I’m a sucker for murder mysteries and legal thrillers, and Lisa Scottoline almost always hits it out of the park for me. Betrayed does not disappoint. Scottoline’s characters are well-developed and I am eager to find out what sort of scheme it was that the victim was involved in. Hopefully, Judy Carrier will find out that her Aunt Barb’s trust was not misplaced.

Excerpt from Orbs

I recently read Orbs, by Nicholas Sansbury Smith, the first book in this post-apocalyptic sci-fi series. There was lots of tension and action for the thriller lover, but if you are someone who expects the science and logic to be sound, you might want to give this one a pass. There are some major failings in both. If you can overlook it to enjoy the action, have at it!
