I have read several of M.C. Beaton’s Agatha Raisin series, but I have not read the first one. And here it is, The Quiche of Death. Agatha retires from her advertising agency and moved to the Cottswalds, fulfilling a childhood dream. Only she finds out she doesn’t like it that much, or the people there don’t like her that much, and she decides to make a splash by winning a cooking prize at the county fair. But she can’t cook. And that’s just the beginning.

Excerpt from The Haunting of Hill House

You may recognize this week’s title, as it has also been made into a TV series apparently available on Netflix. The Haunting of Hill House is a 1959 gothic horror novel written by Shirley Jackson. It was hailed by the Wall Street Journal as “now widely regarded as the greatest haunted-house story ever written.” It is also the story behind the movies “The Haunting.”

Excerpt from Low Pressure

I am currently reading Sandra Brown’s Low Pressure. A murder mystery where the main character, Bellamy Lyston, has written a fictional novel based on her own sister’s murder and all of the personalities involved. This might not seem like such a bad idea when the killer had already been caught, tried, and incarcerated, but if the wrong man ended up in prison, that would mean that the real killer is still on the outside. Brown ramps up the suspense as Bellamy digs into past to try to discover the bits of what happened that day that she has blocked from her memory.

I’ve read and mentioned a few other Louise Penny books on this blog before. Based in Quebec, the Inspector Gamache series always delves deep into the setting and history, psychology, and the complex relationships between the characters. Gamache has dealt with a lot of betrayal and corruption in his time, and in this volume, he is once again trying to root out the source of the ongoing problems in the Sûreté du Québec and how it is tied into the mysterious map and disappearing villages.

Brad Meltzer is a master of the political intrigue thriller. Looking at his Amazon page, he also writes biographies for children that look quite interesting! I am loving Zig in The Escape Artist, underdog, mortician for fallen soldiers at Dover Air Force Base, still in mourning over the death of his young daughter years before. He is an artist and a someone who believes deeply in making things right. Not a lot of writers can pull off main characters who are broken or depressed, but Meltzer does it well.
