Vegan Baked Alaska

“At least you won’t be stumbling over any bodies on an Alaskan cruise.”

Mary Lou couldn’t have been more wrong. Of course Erin Price, gluten-free baker extraordinaire, would stumble over a body on the cruise she had won in the baking category at the Fall Fair. The trouble is, no one will believe her.

Even Terry Piper, dubbed Officer Handsome by Vic, has his doubts about what Erin claims to have seen.

Sparking an international incident wasn’t quite what Erin had planned for her relaxing vacation, but she is determined to prove that she saw what she did and to bring the culprits to justice.

Like baking mysteries? Cats, dogs, and other pets? Award-winning and USA Today Bestselling Author P.D. Workman brings readers back to small town Bald Eagle Falls for another culinary cozy mystery to be solved by gluten-free baker Erin Price and her friends.

Here are some questions and answers I have given about Vegan Baked Alaska:

So what caused you to go vegan?

I was interested in vegetarianism for a long time, but didn’t do anything about it when I was still living at home and not providing my own meals. Shortly after I got married, I started having severe gastric attacks that would have me in great pain and throwing up for three days. After a few of these episodes, I started to notice that each time, I was throwing up red meat each time, especially if I’d had a meal that included both meat and dairy, such as tacos. That was enough for me to immediately give up red meat and dairy immediately.

(I have no idea if I have alpha gal allergy, one of the causes of an intolerance to mammalian meats. Alpha gal allergy can be caused by ticks, as discussed in In the Tick of Time.)

In looking for new meals to replace the meat and dairy in my diet, I joined a lot of vegan listservs (this was way before Facebook). The rest is history. I have been vegan/vegetarian for 25 years now.

In Vegan Baked Alaska, Erin and her friends accidentally end up on a vegan cruise to Alaska. As none of them are vegetarian, they have a number of preconceptions of what the food will be like and explore some new cuisine along the way. Of course, the food becomes less of a focus when the bodies start piling up…

Does that stuff really happen on cruise ships?

Yes, believe it or not, people disappearing, murder, rape, and slave labour are not so uncommon on cruise ships. Since they are not governed by US law in international waters, reports are kept to a minimum and only the occasional murder makes it to the media, usually some months after it happened. Each ship is equipped with a morgue for cold storage of those who die enroute, but only rarely with a brig for detaining criminals. Those who disappear are generally reported as having gone ashore and not returned to the ship.

I’ll put a few articles in the Book Club Resources.

“Every single one of [P.D. Workman’s] books has spoken to me … And I have found strength in the books I’ve read.”

“This is one author I certainly will be looking out for, I can’t recommend her enough.”

“I’ll read anything by P. D. Workman that I can get my hands on.”

“Every book by PD Workman that I’ve read has been a gripping one, however different the genres are, going from lighter mysteries to really dark ones… this is one of my favourite, most dependable authors.”

“P.D. Workman is an incredibly versatile writer. No matter which of her books I read I am drawn into a great story and honestly, I don’t think I’ve followed another author that could go from cozy mystery to YA to a PI series dealing with mental health issues. Really enjoy her books!”

“[P.D. Workman’s] stories are so believable and you can’t help but feel like you know these people. You find yourself crying, laughing and feeling the characters emotions. Now if an author can make you cry and feel every emotion in a story, she is one hell of an author.”

“P. D. Workman, does not shy from probing the deep psychological scars of childhood trauma, mental illness, and addiction. Also characteristic of this author, these extremely sensitive issues are explored with extensive empathy, described with incredible clarity, and portrayed with profound insight.”

“Once again P.D.Workman has created an intense psychological mystery that impacts a wallop of thought induction. The writing is so well developed and draws you into the characters story.”
