Sometimes a side character in a story becomes so interesting that you just have to write about them again! I had so much fun writing about Etienne in Skunk Man Swamp that I just couldn’t leave it there. Since Reg didn’t have any reason to go back to the Everglades (and, in fact, had reasons not to go there,) then Etienne would come to Reg.
The slow, thoughtful pace of Etienne’s forest folk culture reminds me somewhat of the ents in Tolkien’s Middle Earth, the shepherds of the trees. For Etienne, talking pictures (movies) are something new, and he has barely moved into the cabin he has lived in for 70 years. Taking less than a month to write a letter to Ilka is unthinkable. So when Ilka decides to do an end-run around the usual Bigfoot courting rituals, Etienne is understandably anxious!
