Author Notes may contain spoilers!

Muffins Masks Murder revolves around a death in police custody. There are many different causes of death in custody. The leading manner of arrest-related deaths is homicide by law enforcement officers. Of course, in 75% of those cases, arrests were made in response to a violent offense, such as assault, robbery or murder. It is only natural, when an offender dies during and arrest or shortly after, for suspicion to be thrown on the arresting officer.

But in 25% of cases, the cause of death is not homicide. It may be suicide, intoxication, accident, or natural causes. In 3-5% of arrest-related deaths, the manner of death cannot be determined. Some of these may be due to sudden cardiac death or excited delerium. It can be impossible to tell whether sudden cardiac death has been caused by allergy, obstruction, poisoning, asphyxiation, etc.
