Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules at Books and a Beat. Anyone can play along.

And as I usually do when I am gearing up for a new release, I am giving you two teasers today! One from Lost in the Sun and one from my upcoming release Mito.

Lost in the Sun

Lost in the Sun reminds me of a couple of other young adult books I’ve read in the last year about mental illness. While Challenger Deep and A Head Full of Ghosts are both about families dealing with teens with schizophrenia, there are definite parallels with Lost in the Sun, about a middle-schooler suffering anxiety after a traumatic event. It was an enjoyable, engaging read, and I thought that Trent’s emotions were particularly well-handled. I felt like it ended just a little too soon, but it was still well done.

So can you blame me if I drew pictures sometimes? If my thoughts were full of Jared? One thing was for sure: If Jared Richards really had fallen off a tightrope, instead of getting whacked in the chest by yours truly, no one would even have to ask if I wanted to join their pickup games.

Lost in the Sun, Lisa Graff

lost-longEveryone says that middle school is awful, but Trent knows nothing could be worse than the year he had in fifth grade, when a freak accident on Cedar Lake left one kid dead, and Trent with a brain full of terrible thoughts he can’t get rid of. Trent’s pretty positive the entire disaster was his fault, so for him middle school feels like a fresh start, a chance to prove to everyone that he’s not the horrible screw-up they seem to think he is.

If only Trent could make that fresh start happen.

It isn’t until Trent gets caught up in the whirlwind that is Fallon Little—the girl with the mysterious scar across her face—that things begin to change. Because fresh starts aren’t always easy. Even in baseball, when a fly ball gets lost in the sun, you have to remember to shift your position to find it.

Mito, Medical Kidnap Files #1

Medical Kidnap Files is an exciting new series being released in October, November, and December this year. Mito is scheduled to be released October 3. Un these YA medical thrillers, you will meet Gabriel, Renata, and other teens who have been wrongfully apprehended by Social Services because of their medical conditions.

The nurse watched Renata walk out. She shook her head. “Don’t you listen to anything Renata Vega has to say,” she warned Gabriel. She moved the call button just out of his reach and tucked the sheets around him, making it more difficult to move. She slid the visitor chair back against the wall again. “Renata has a lot of issues.”

Gabriel has dealt with mysterious medical issues his whole life. Just when he finally thought that they had all of the answers and he was on the road to good health, he is apprehended by DFS on the grounds of medical neglect.

At first, he thought that he would be back home in a few days, once the misunderstanding was cleared up. But when Renata tells Gabriel her crazy conspiracy theories, Gabriel feels the first pangs of doubt. Is there really a conspiracy? Will he ever be able to get well and go back to his mother, or is he doomed to be another guinea pig for Doctor De Klerk?

  1. Lost in the Sun sounds like a powerful book. I admit I was one who hated middle school. High school wasn’t much better. College was my fresh start.

Mito sounds interesting. I like the teaser you shared.

  2. Eek! You wouldn’t want to get stuck in hospital and helpless with staff like THAT around, would you? These both sound like they’re real pageturners. Many thanks for sharing!
