Educate Yourself and Help Others with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

I hope you had a chance to pick up She Told a Lie and some of the other freebies last weekend! If you didn’t, She Wore Mourning is still a free download.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

This one is a quick read, but a fun one, especially for fans of the Harry Potter world:

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is an encyclopedic book about various magical creatures in J.K. Rowling’s magical world. This is not the screenplay/movie. It begins with some playful forwards/introductions, and then proceeds into the encyclopedia of magical beasts (and where to find them.) Fans will recognize not only the popular mythical creatures like dragons, fairies, and phoenixes, but also some of J.K. Rowling’s creations like nifflers and bowtruckles.

And what’s with the “and help others” in my blog post title today? J.K. Rowling has directed proceeds from Fantastic Beasts and some of her other companion books in the Potter world to two agencies that help marginalized communities:

Comic Relief

“Comic Relief raises money to support people living incredibly tough lives. Through humour and stories of hope, we’ve shown that people can make a massive difference. We fund hundreds of amazing organisations who are working on the ground to support the most vulnerable people and communities in society.

This includes vulnerable children and young people, people who are homeless or living in extreme poverty, women and families at risk of domestic abuse and those struggling with existing or new mental health problems”

Lumos

“Across the world many families face poverty, conflict or a lack of support to care for children. Placing their children in orphanages or other institutions can seem like the only possible solution, with the promise of better education, healthcare and food security. These promises are rarely fulfilled. Children separated from their families become trapped and vulnerable; deprived of the love and attention of a family, harming their development and future.

Lumos was founded by J K Rowling to illuminate a path for children living in harmful orphanages and other institutions, to a brighter future. By tackling the causes of family separation – poverty, abuse, domestic violence and disability discrimination – children can be united with loving families where they can thrive and be supported to reach their full potential.”

Just as an aside—the audiobook version of Fantastic Beasts is full of great sound effects. Very entertaining to listen to. Now, onto the teaser:

Imperfect understanding is often more dangerous than ignorance.”

J.K. Rowling, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Newt Scamander’s classic compendium of magical creatures, has delighted generations of wizarding readers. With this beautiful, large-scale new edition illustrated in full color, Muggles too will have the chance to discover where the Runespoor lives, what the Puffskein eats, and why shiny objects should always be kept away from the Niffler.
